The Burberry Zucchini

The other morning I asked Big Girl which bathing suit she wanted me to pack for camp.
Me: “What suit do you want?”
Big Girl: “Um… My zucchini.”
I smiled. “Your zucchini, huh?”
I couldn’t bring myself to correct her. This was too cute.
“Yes, Mom. My zucchini!”

When we were younger, my sisters and I used to call magazines mazagines and Parmesan parsabom. Mom couldn’t bring herself to correct us. It was too cute.

When Big Girl was born, one of my best friends Tree (no, not the one who dated JP!) gave me a baby gift. I opened it and cracked up. It was an itty-bitty Burberry string bikini. Big Girl wore it for the first time when we took her to Cape Cod that summer. She was six months, bald as can be, thighs full of delicious baby rolls.
Less than two weeks ago, we went to the Cape again as we now do every summer. I was eager for the trip, to get away, to soak up the sun and feel the sand in my toes. But I was also eager to break out that tiny suit once more. As I finagled Little Girl, now four months, into her big sister’s “zucchini,” I couldn’t stop smiling. There she was, my tiny creature, yes bald, yes chubby, in that stringy thing.
These girls with their mixed-up words and fabulous hand-me-downs? They bring me endless joy. It’s true.

Did you mix up words as a kid? Do your kids have any cute words for things? Do you enjoy hand-me-downs for the memories they conjure?

My eldest son used to call butterflies “boo-boo ties.” To this day that is my favorite word.
We had flutterbies, aminals, wobblies (wallabies – small kangaroos) and all manner of English-German fusions.
I had a chuckle when I saw your tweet about this yesterday. And yes, pure cute. My husband always wants to correct the boys when they make these small mistakes. My oldes for example always calls the tv, tb and the remote, camote. I love it. I want to hold on to it. So I refuse.
We had “mazagines” in our house too. My little niece (just 3) has trouble with saying Emily so I’m “Aunt Enemy”. Luckily, she does not think I’m out to get her.
My current favorite in our house is “caterpillar.” Prounounced “pappapippa” by IEP.
Aidan,
Can’t decide what is cuter, the story or the photo. My two faves in my house are: “chatter bunnies” for Annie’s cheddar bunnies, so apt for a child of two litigators, no? The other is when my son holds the door open for people, he says, “please go ahead, I exist.” (instead of “I insist.”
Hope all is well!

Cute story….. Priceless photo
I love seeing my girls in hand-me-downs… it really emphasizes how they are growing – seeing an outfit on girl #2 that girl #1 had worn… just last night girl #3 was wearing a cute little shirt that both her older sisters had worn and I got sad thinking that this was the end of the line for this shirt and our family! I tend to be pretty sentimental about that stuff. They are just growing so fast! That little zucchini is the cutest
So adorable!
When I was younger I called my scalp, my scallop. When my mom would brush my hair I would say, “Ouch mom, you are hurting my scallop!”
So cute! Oh a reason I lament not having a girl—no zucchinis for us! My little one is just learning to talk, so we are pretty much 100% in cute mis-pronounciation-land. I will miss it. My favorite is when he tries to sing twinkle twinkle little star: up up up up ba ba bye (up above the world so high). He gets the tune PERFECT, but the words…not so much.
Love that Burberry “zucchini”! Very cute.
Until she was around 5, my little sister couldn’t pronounce “Ms.” So her big sis, Megan, began “Nay-gan.” My aunt? “Nonica.” When she’s feeling silly, sometimes she still calls me that!
That pic is so absurdly cute! I want to eat her up
.
Tree loves this post.
And the bikini.
And especially that babe.
Awwww! From smaller siblings, at our house we regularly eat “waterlemons,” “stroga-noga,” and “zahn-zahn” (the last two are beef stroganoff and lasagna, respectively). Can wait to see what the baby comes up with as she gets older!
Adorable!
I couldn’t pronounce the name “Debbie” — one of my mom’s best friends and the name of my favorite doll — I will never forget my baby “Dubbie.”
A co-worker’s daughter told her mom she wanted “Doggy do” for a snack…her mom concluded that it would be a good idea to make “Puppy chow” (the beloved Chex cereal snack)!
Very sweet post. My daughter still says “snawich” instead of sandwich. I will be sad when she learns to pronounce it correctly.
There are so many things I don’t correct… particularly now when my youngest is three. I know that all that cuteness won’t last much longer. Her preschool teacher “Julianne” is “Joo-wee-anne” which just makes me melt. For the longest time, “your” or “yours” was pronounced “ors”, as in “Daddy, is that ors car?”. That disappeared recently, and it makes me sad that it is gone. Goofy at Disney World is Doofy, and probably will be forever! I’m sure I probably corrected some of these things with my older two, but with my youngest, I am just enjoying it all while it lasts!!
