Do you remember running and jumping in leaf piles when you were little? I do.
Do you remember the crispness, the crunch, the surrender, the smiles? I do.
Do you remember feeling free, and young, and invincible? I do.
Do you remember looking up, at the big blue sky and thinking there are no limits? I think I’m making this part up, but maybe.
These little girls of mine? They help me remember good things. And relive them.
Another precious perk of this gig.
Did you have leaf parties when you were younger? Have you had any this season with your wee ones? Do you agree that one of the best parts of parenthood is being able to relive wonderful and simple childhood experiences?

Oh, jumping in leaves was a favorite activity – one done with one of our many uncles when we were little and he was still living with Grandma and Grandpa, and done on our own once we got older and he moved away. Even now, I can’t see a pile of leaves without wanting to leap into it. And my littles love it too!
This past week, Joy took advantage of the unexpected snowfall at my parents’ on Thanksgiving to build a snowman and explore through the fields with her Uncle D. Warmed my heart, seeing her building the kind of fun relationship with her uncle I still have with mine.
I love reliving my childhood experiences with my daughter! I think it really strengthens that sense of continuity we enjoy with our children. I recently shared The Muppet Show with my daughter and I have to confess that it made me happy to see her enjoying the same thing I enjoyed when I was a child.
